We feel totally dismayed and sadly overcome by the death of our friend and pal Marc “Léon” Mathis on Saturday the 14th of November. It happened in Alsace, near Strasburg, in a crash at the controls of an ultralight aircraft prototype he was doing the flight test program. He said us “ I accepted to do the job ” when Marc gave his word this meant he never changed his mind.
The reasons of the crash are not well established at the time beeing. The Strasburg BGTA (Investigation branch of the air transports police brigade) is actually investigating the crash site with the help assistance of the presence of inboard cameras in the aircraft.

We express a deep thought to Marc’s wife and family for the tragedy that hurts them today.
“Léon” Mathis best known as Marc for his friends in Alsace and Germany was known as a good living, facetious and joking guy but as soon as he took the controls of an airplane he became a great professional pilot.
He had clocked more than 22 000 flights hours, beginning in a flight club then having a rich aeronautical life demonstrating and selling MS 893 Rallye to customers, being a bush pilot in Africa, culminating as a DC-10 Captain for Air Liberté.
Last but not least Marc “Léon” Mathis was one of the most experienced airshows warbirds pilot of the past thirty years. He was chosen by the german LBA (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) to tune up the FW 190 Flugwerk replica.
It is in the FW 190 F-AZJJ in the bay of Toulon, the 12th July 2010, following a propeller rupture. Fortunately, he escaped the aircraft safely from the shallow water.
Mark was known and recognized as a Zlin 526 virtuoso and aerobatics master, thrilling the crowds with his very low inverted flights above the ground.

Marc is now much higher in the sky in close company with lot of other missing pilots and friends, telling them his endless joke routines.

So long Marc, we’ll miss you.
